Getting ready for the Red Lake I-500

Last year we ran the I-500 cross-country race as a team and now YOU can too.

The USCC (U.S. Cross-Country Snowmobile Racing Association) announced Tuesday that it is creating a new class - Team 600 - for the Red Lake I-500 this January in Thief River Falls, Minn.

The new class allows racers to create a team of two or three individuals, with one person riding the sled each day of the three-day race. In addition, the team can use one to three sleds in the event, allowing friends and family to ride as a team using one machine, and allowing individuals to ride their own sleds.

Sleds must be no larger than 600cc if 2-stroke, or 1050cc if a 4-stroke. USCC says sleds may be from any model year.

Essentially the snowmobiling media, including American Snowmobiler, were guinea pigs during the 2008 race to see how this system would work. We rode identically prepared F5s provided by Arctic Cat and had a blast. Encouraging USCC to adopt a team class for the race was unanimous among those of us who got to experience the race.

    Feeling racy at the I-500

Our team members enjoyed working together on the pit stops and repairing the sled at the end of the day, plus the chance to race hard against some of the best cross-country racers in the world. The USCC continues to offer 11 individual classes for the I-500 too.

"The Team 600 class gives riders a chance to be a part of this historic race without the full affect of the physical demands that come with racing 500 miles over three days," said Pat Mach, USCC president. In addition, he said the ability to spread the expenses for the race among two or three team members should make the new class attractive to many people.

The 2009 Red Lake I-500 will be Jan. 16-18, and runs out of the Seven Clans Casino just outside Thief River Falls, Minn. More info:
