Eagle River, Wis. - The Pettinelli family from Rome, N.Y., came to the Vintage World Championship at the Derby Track here last weekend and left with two-thirds of the hardware.

Brothers Tony Pettinelli Jr. and his brother, Dave, pushed their Chapparal Firebird SSXs to a sweep of first and second in an exciting 10-lap finale that featured several crashes and two red flags. Tony beat his younger brother by several sled lengths with last year's winner, Fred Smith of Plymouth, Minn., coming home third on the same Ski-Doo Blizzard he'd won with in both 2008 and 2003.

Jacob Goede of Shakopee, Minn., led the first seven laps aboard his Polaris Starfire before Pettinelli edged past him. Goede ended up crashing into the turn three wall on the final lap to finish eighth.

Both Pettinelli brothers were on their cell phones right after their top two finish to call folks back home and tell them about their big weekend. Their sleds are sponsored by Miller Racing. Each year's winner receives the American Snowmobiler Eagle Award trophy to mark the win of the premier vintage race in North America.

Derby Track officials said more than 650 vintage sleds were entered fo the races, another record turnout. The 46th Annual World Championship will run at the Eagle River track this coming weekend, Jan. 16-18, the finals coming late in the afternoon on Sunday. Brian Bewcyk of Winnipeg, Man., won last year on a Ski-Doo.
