Federal funding for trails through the Recreational Trails Program received an additional 6 months of life in mid-September with a Congressional extension.
The program had only been funded through September 30, 2011 as a result of the last extension. It is now funded through March, 2012.
These funds are derived from the federal gas tax dollars that consumers pay every time they gas up their snowmobiles and other off highway vehicles.
RTP dollars help fund snowmobile programs, and trail programs for maintenance, improvements and grooming.
There is now a mark-up hearing scheduled for November 9, 2011 in the Senate Environment and Public Works subcommittee of Transportation and Infrastructure.
During the last extension, there were statements made by legislators that there would be no more extensions. It appears the efforts are to enact a two-year bill.
