EAGLE RIVER, WIS. – Malcolm Chartier, of Marine City, Mich., won the AmSoil Snowmobile World Championship Jan. 20 by 0.94 seconds at the Eagle River Derby Track, which was celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Over 30,000 fans attended. “We worried about snow dust, but the cold weather made the engines run better,” Chartier told AmSnow. The 30-lap race had three red flags, and Chartier won with a time of 20:41.288. He edged Jordan Wahl, who finished at 20:41.382, and Matt Schulz, at 20:41.383.
Chartier said he knew that several riders were right behind him, but that most laps he felt pretty dominating with his Ski-Doo powered sled.
“It doesn’t matter if you win by a foot or a mile,” Chartier said.
The $60,000 in prize money will be used for Chartier’s team to go to Jackson Hole, Wyo., in March and the rest will go to fund his racing. “It was a dream come true,” Chartier said.
