Project S.O.S. attempts new Guinness World water record

The Project S.O.S crew attempted to set a new Guinness World Record for distance traveled by a snowmobile on water on on May 20 at TJ’s Harbor Restaurant in Oshkosh, WI on Lake Winnebago.

The team was challenged by 15-20 mph winds and 2-3-foot waves.

Here is the account from the team.

At 8 am we made our first attempt with the wind blowing directly at our face so plan was head straight out of the bay and then turn as need to get into a good flow with the waves, well after about a half mile the sled caught a large wave that took us down.

We got the sled back to shore and decided to wait for a window with better conditions. During this time the crew tore the sled completely down and checked everything out from top to bottom to make sure the sled would be perfect for this next attempt. About 6 hours later we felt we had the best conditions possible and to reach the mileage goal we set we needed to go now.

Launch went perfect and the Yamaha Nytro Genesis 4 Stroke motor pulled strong, too strong for the two Yamaha VX1100 watercraft to even keep up! We came out of the first bay and rounded the point to hit 2-3-foot rollers that the sled was pounding through but the constant waves were scrubbing off too much speed so I turned towards shore to try and running closer using that as a block for the wind. It was working well until I cleared the next point and it was pretty much all open water after that with more big rollers. I kept the throttle wide open but it became very clear that the conditions would not allow us to reach our goal of breaking the Guinness Record so I just turned to head for a safe landing spot on shore. Again we fell far short of our goal but 2 miles in these conditions was a huge challenge.

Record was not meant to be ours yet but the crew and I are already working on plans for the next attempt.

Huge thanks to the crew for all the hard work and my family for supporting me through another crazy idea. Without the support of a great wife I wouldn’t even be able to pull these things off!!

We cannot thank all of sponsors enough for their support:
