Winter has arrived in the North Woods, and that means snowmobiling season is just around the corner in Eagle River, Wis. Recent snow has coated area trails, and with a favorable future forecast, grooming could be completed as early as Monday, Dec. 12.

Known as the Snowmobile Capital of the World, Eagle River boasts expansive network of trails (often referred to as the "Eagle River 500”) that connects the Eagle River area to surrounding North Woods towns. The trails are meticulously maintained by local groomers from the volunteer-based Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club, Inc.

For more than half a century, Eagle River has also hosted the "Indianapolis 500 of Snowmobile Racing" during AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby Week. During Jan. 13-22, 2017, more than 40,000 spectators will take in the action of snowmobilers traveling at speeds greater than 100 mph on the solid ice oval.

Riders are advised to take the necessary steps to prep their sleds for the start of the season before heading out on the trails. All information regarding the snowmobile season, including trail condition updates, can be found here.
