VIDEO: Levi LaVallee Makes St. Paul His Freestyle Playground

Posted one year ago by Emily Hare
Growing up in Minnesota, snowmobiling legend Levi LaVallee dreamed of performing stunts in the city of St. Paul. A few weeks ago, with the support of both the city, he turned the bustling metropolis into his own personal freestyle playground, and the folks at Red Bull were there to get it all on film. The project included several high-risk jumps and stunning urban backdrops. Most would think a snowmobile is out of place in a big city, but LaVallee seems right at home! The Minnesota native and 1...

RACE RECAP: Martin Outlasts Hibbert in ISOC Round 13

Posted one year ago by Emily Hare
Tucker Hibbert has dominated the rest of the AMSOIL Championship Snocross field for the majority of the 2015-16 season. But it was another racer, Ross Martin, who finished on top of the podium in Round 13 at Route 66 Raceway (Joliet, Ill.) Friday night. The drag strip of Route 66 Raceway, having been converted into a tight and technical snocross course, featured one of the roughest tracks of the ISOC National season. Hibbert quickly moved through the field after a mid-pack start in the 15-rider...

2017 Update: Arctic Cat Snow Vehicle

Posted one year ago by Ross Halvorson
The new snow bike-looking machine from Cat is a dedicated “snowmobile;” at least that’s what the engineers are building. The goal is to pass all SSCC (Snowmobile Safety Certification Committee) regulations. (More info on those rules at www.snowmobilesafetycertification.org)  At our few glances of the SVX 450, first at Hay Days and then again in January, and again in February we noticed a few hurdles still remained. Things we questioned included a correct working headlight...

Mid-Season Review: 2016 Arctic Cat XF 8000 Crosstrek

Posted one year ago by Emily Hare
I like to think of our 2016 Arctic Cat XF 8000 Crosstrek as our “Smokey and the Bandit” sled. If I had a long way to go, and a short (or even long) time to get there, this was the sled I was pulling out of our stable! The machine solved all our usual gripes about wind protection and lack of storage by coming with a tall windshield, including mirrors (what are those, right?), and soft saddlebags stock. The 800cc Suzuki twin under the hood has proven plenty reliable, and the TEAM clut...

Cor PowerSports Announces Race Cancellations, Reschedulings

Posted one year ago by Emily Hare
For the Cor PowerSports cross country racing series (and many other snowmobile racing organizations), the 2016 race season has been more about scrambling and rescheduling events due to low snow or lack of safe ice than actual racing. Last Friday, while setting up the Castle Rock course in Friendship, Wis., the winds picked up and the afternoon rain began. Shortly after they finished marking the 8-mile course, the crew noticed that there was water starting to pool in areas on the lake, and the p...

Posted one year ago by Emily Hare
According to a survey recently conducted by Powersports Business and RBC Capital Markets, fourth-quarter sales for snowmobiles are down from from the previous year for two-thirds of snowmobile dealers. This comes as no surprise considering the mild winter that many have been having in North America. Only 22% of dealers surveyed had increased sales in Q4, and 48% said sales were down 20% or more. Low snowfall totals are chiefly to blame for the dip in sales. Karen Shaw, owner of Belleville, Ont...

Posted one year ago by Emily Hare
Last week, National Straightline Snowmobile Racing (NSSR) released what it hopes will be its last schedule adjustment this season. The unseasonably mild weather in the Midwest has put a damper on winter and a significant dent into the original NSSR schedule. Races at Green Bay, Wis.; Fairmont, Minn.; and Howard Lake, Minn., have been cancelled because of unsafe conditions, but the NSSR is hopeful that the events at Forest Lake, Minn., and Chetek, Wis., will still go on as scheduled.
