    COR PowerSports XC Weekend Recap

With 4-6 inches of snow on the lake and minimal slush during pre-race setup, the Cor PowerSports crew set up a very technical 6-mile course Rounds 4 and 5 hosted by Birch Island Resort January 24 and 25 in Phillips, Wis.

Saturday's racers were greeted with temps in the mid-30's which caused slush issues throughout the day. As most of you know, lake courses are not plowed out as to keep close to a true crosscountry race. The course was rough but still had some speed sections and tight corners.

Racer's learned in the early races that our 100-mile Pro Stock / Semi Pro Stock race at the end of the day would be an endurance battle, as in the short 30-40 mile races rider's were already losing brakes.

Eight Pros squared off for the 100-mile Pro Stock race, which had an additional $1,500 purse kicked in from local businesses and the town chamber, so that gave the guys some extra incentive. Polaris' Ryan Faust set a blazing pace through the first seven laps, prior to taking his mandatory fuel stop. From there, things got very interesting! Arctic Cat racer Casey Pries inherited a short-lived lead for two laps, but he hadn't taken his mandatory fuel stop. When Pries pitted for fuel, Faust retook the lead, but blew a belt on lap 10. This enabled fellow Polaris rider Andy Wenzlaff to take over first position, holding on for two laps until his fuel stop. This lead to the fifth lead change in seven laps as the lead was turned back over to Casey Pries.

Lurking during all this battling up was Polaris' Travis Faust on his Axys Pro S. On lap 15 Casey Pries went by the refueling area signaling to his crew that something was wrong with his steed. His brakes were gone, causing him to struggle slowing for corners and Travis Faust took over on lap 16. At the start of the white flag lap Andy Wenzlaff had taken the lead back from Travis Faust and it was a good old battle coming into the checkered flag, where Travis managed to edge out Andy on corrected time by 10 seconds.

Saturday's Pro Stock finished with Travis Faust in first, Andy Wenzlaff second, and Arctic Cat Racer and defending Cor PowerSports Pro points champion, Nick Fischer, was third.

Just when we thought the Pros put on probably the best race of the year, Sunday saw Pro Open riders Andy Wenzlaff, Nick Fischer, Casey Pries and Dillan Dohrn put on a clinic! These four guys went bar to bar from the drop of the green flag throughout their entire 5 lap race! They we're probably never more than 100 feet apart and even closer for the final three laps. In the end, the Wenzlaff edged out Pries by less than two seconds with Dohrn taking third five seconds back.

In the other classes competition faired just as great with multiple races decided by just seconds.

Stay tuned to for more exciting racing action from race circuits around North America!
