It's February – the time of year to don a bikini and ride a snowmobile! With the lack of winter weather this year, the members of the Genesee Sno Packers Snowmobile Club decided to allow ATVs and dirt bikes to also be a part of its 3rd Annual Bikini Rally.
The Sno Packers decided to keep things local this year, donating the raised money to the Roswell Cancer Institute’s Team Cure. This event has grown bigger every year, raising more and more money for fight against cancer. The Club sponsors the rally, hosts a basket auction and sells food to raise funds. This year, there were 83 baskets for the auction. Spectators purchased ticket cards for $5 each, then put their tickets in for the basket or baskets that they hoped to win.
Bikini Rally participants registered a few months prior to the event, then went out to recruit sponsors. There were three different levels of sponsorship – Bronze ($20-$99), Silver ($100-$499) and Gold ($500 and above) – making it easy for any size business to contribute. This year, there were 32 participants, both men and women. Yes, the men also put on bikini tops, and many wear outfits that are a little more interesting then others. But then again, it is all for a good cause.
The participants made several passes down the track. These are not races, just simple passes at a comfortable pace, side by side. They started with their bikini rally t-shirts on for the first pass, and then the clothes started to come off, until only the bikini was worn. Between passes, they warmed up inside the tent. On the final run, they made three passes before getting dressed and warm again. The girls and guys had a great time and forged great friendships. It was neat to see how they all interacted with each other and the spectators in an effort to churn up more donations.
Speaking of donations, this year they also offered an opportunity to donate online for those not able to make it to the event or sponsor one of the participants. The site is still open to donations; if you'd like to contribute, click here.
So far this year, the Bikini Rally has raised $14,186 for the Roswell Cancer Institute. What a great feeling for the club and the participants to raise this much money for a great cause!
Every year, the Sno Packers honor participants who raise the most money: Brandon Brown (Most Spirited), Caitlyn O'Dell (1st Place in Pledges - $2,355), Courtney Morrell (2nd Place in Pledges - $1,302), Ashley Hellwig (3rd Place in Pledges - $1,020).
Donations kept coming in after the event, and because of this, Vanessa Staples should have been awarded 3rd Place with $1,110. The club would like to give her an honorable mention.
The Sno Packers are already working to make next year's event bigger and better, and I think they've already started their snow dances. So, if you are in the Western New York area next February, make sure you take time to come out and support a great cause.
