We have a 2000 600 xc that backfires after you start it up,sometimes pretty major. Normally onlt will do it once, maybe a few small pops, but warms up and seems fine.  Just cleaned carbs today, did not see anything out of the ordinary, compression good, could it just be the older gas.

I WOULD DEFINITELY START WITH THE GAS

NEXT SOMETIMES  THOSE POPS COULD BE A LEAN CONDITION.  WHAT KIND OF CARBS KEIHN OR MIKUNI, I KNOW KEIHNS TEND TO HAVE SOME LEAN TENDENCYS

Let the sled idle for 10 seconds before you shut off motor,  if you shut off right away at high idle raw fuel is going into exhaust pipe, and when you restart you are firing raw fuel in pipe.  Common in old TXL'S  and xc 700'S
