Hi I am going to stud my 2001 Polaris 500 classic touring sled. I am new to the sport and do not know if this machine requires tunnel protectors with studs. It looks like the heat exchangers are under the running boards, but im not sure what I need. Any help would be great thanks.

Yes. I just looked up the cooling system and it  has the front cooler and one on each running board.

You will have to remove the seat and tank to install. The OEM tunnel protectors ar aluminum and should be available at a Polaris dealer. You might be able to get them aftermarket.
