ANYONE HEARD OF ONE OF THESE?
Posted by Yammiman on Sunday, November 06, 2005 11:10 AM
My buddies father died a couple of years ago and in his estate was a 1976 Yamaha PR440 sled - my buddy said it has a lever that you can put the sled in neutral and the owners manual refers to the drive system as a "torque converter drive system" - I've been around Yamaha sleds for a long time, and I've never seen or heard about a sled like this - it has to be extremely rare - anyone?

I had a feeling you would be the one that would know - been searching, can't find an photos of any - even on yamahamotor.com - I haven't seen the sled yet, but he says it is in real good shape without many miles on it - he said that not many were made - how exactly did the drive system work?

My cousin (and next door neighbor) had a new one.  Like all Yamahas, it is a very well built sled.  It wasn't made for hi performance, just dependable crusing.  I don't remember all the particulars but it is similar to the '74 Arctic Panther that I bought my nephew 25 years ago.  It had a torque converter just like a car.  Power came from the torque converter to the chain case via a chain.  It had no low end so we converted it to clutches for the kid.

I had the 1975 version called a TL 433. It was a very smooth running set up, A cogged belt drove the converter and had neutral for warm up. I think it was sold or traded with about 2,400 Mi and had 0 problem's. kviper

So judging from the vintagesnowmobiles.com, they made this sled for at least two years? - or is it more likely the one my buddy has is a 77? - looks like they had that drive system for a while - seems like it would be heavy and rob alot of hp!

THE 1976 MODEL WAS PROBLEY MOST HYPED. IF YA LOOK AT IT, THIS SNOWMOBILE HAD SAME STYLING AS THE GS340 AND THE GS300. THIS SLED STILL WITH THE FANCY NEW TORQUE CONVERTER HAD TO GO AGAINST THE THEN BRAND NEW 440 EXCITER WHICH WAS ONE OF THE BEST SLEDS YAMAHA MADE. I,LL DIG OUT THAT MANUAL FOR YA IF YA NEED ANY INFO. ! 3:16 (tony)

My dad had two of those 440 Exciter's that I use to get to ride - those were really great sleds for the time - I had a 73 GP433 one winter, and I've never seen any of them around - be fun to find one!

pr ron without a doubt is the man for the prestige 440. i do remember seeing this snowmobile brand new in 1976 at my dealers. very cool sled in their day and very high tech for 1976. 3:16 (yammie tony)
