Snowmobile manufacturers prepare 2010 models for EPA's new standards |
|
Snowmobilers are expected to see at this year's spring shows
2010 models equipped with special technology in order to meet EPA's phase 2
emission standards, according to an ISMA press release.
Phase 2 standards tightened up emission requirements
considerably and required updated emission related technology into the
marketplace.
"Based on snow cover and the cold temperatures this winter,
we are confident that many snowmobilers will be enjoying the new products in
the near future," said Ed Klim, spokesperson for ISMA.
In addition to stricter emission standards, the
manufacturers continued to work on building quieter snowmobiles.
Snowmobile sound testing procedures have been reviewed and updated by the
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
"You can be rest assured the vehicles will be tested to
these new rigid standards and our vehicles will meet these new testing
standards," Klim said.
All new snowmobiles built by Arctic Cat, BRP, Polaris and
Yamaha are Snowmobile Safety Certification Committee certified.
The SSCC required new snowmobiles be certified and audited
by an independent, third party, testing laboratory.
The laboratory the manufacturers of ISMA used SGS US Testing Company, the second largest
third party testing laboratory in the world.
There were 29 separate standards and SAE certification
requirements which all new snowmobiles must meet. These standards cover
areas such as sound level, fuel system, lighting, control systems, shields and
safety guards.
"The certification process is deliberate, concise, and
intense. All engineering specifications must be met and on site testing
and audits both announced and unannounced are conducted by laboratory
personnel," Klim said.
