|
Arctic Cat racers' reign over the Tesoro Iron Dog was broken by Polaris riders Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad with a three minute and 18 second lead over Ski-Doo's Tyler Aklestad and Tyson Johnson on February 15, according to the Tesoro Iron Dog's website.
Both teams set new course records in this 1971 mile race.
Minnick and Olstad came in at 37:19.08 and Aklestad and Johnson came in at 37:22.26.
“We pushed as hard as we could, but we couldn’t catch them,” Johnson told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. “Our only hope was that they blew a belt or something.”
This was Minnick's first win in 10 tries, and he and his teammate walked away with a purse worth $25,000.
“We knew our machines were faster on top-end speed, and that’s how it worked out,” Minnick told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
Arctic Cat's Todd Palin, Alaska's Gov. Sarah Palin's husband, and Scott Davis came in sixth place with a time of 41:14.15.
Here are the top sixth finishers:
1 Minnick, Olstad 37:19.08 2 Aklestad, Johnson 37:22.26 3 McKenna, VanMeter 38:06.06 4 Helwig, Quam 39:52.46 5 Huntington, Morgan 39:57.46 6 Davis, Palin 41:14.15
