the 95 and 98 are the same shape , the 95 slitly smaller , wire for wire both box's match identicaly , coil wires , trigger wires , one single ground brown , and the main box wires, all match colors and number of wires perfectly, didnt find a violet or purple on either box . all except for an all brown and black have a color coaded stripe in the main box group. ?? if cats ran a closed system , are you sure it wasnt 94 ? or earlier ? the box's run 400.00 + the plan was to swap these out and test voltage out of the box to the coils at a certain rpm , and run the 95 box if it was greater , i know ign curves varry between these box's , ever single year has a different part number from 95 to 2000 , wide open is what im interested in , same exact set up as last season and my plugs and wash look rediculasly lame/rich/weak compared to last years nice lite tan clean burn...and power down track is down...i have tried everything else.

IMHO, the 95' 800 and 900 boxes have the best curves for mod engines running over 9K.

i heard that also a while back , was hopeing for conformation , we were screaming the 98 box end of last season to almost 10 grand on 2o , had some wierd probs last winter also on ice , changed the stator , still seems like lame fire , same plugs/wash , richen it , plugs/wash look sloopy'r , lean it and plugs look the same but it looses power, i dont think i could deto this motor the way it sits on economy unleaded , and its pumping 180 a hole

Hey ron...This cdi info was shared a while back with me...maybe this will help you out .....Think it's reasonably accurate.....
98 27degrees then finishes at 11.5
96 27 the 13
95 27 then 11.5
93 30 then 13 at 9000

All animosities aside........................are the coils ok at high rpm's? Running the stock ignition like that at high rpm's (10,000+) with no lights or voltage regulator (does it have one) will kill the coils after awhile.

Why would that effect the coils?

As I recall the 800 and 900 were slightly different in 95. I think
one had a degree or two more on top. They both keep retarding into the
9000 rpm range, most other boxes flat line before 9k. Keep in mind this is for the original 95 boxes than came on the sled, the replacements are not as good. BTW, I have one of each for sale.
I know
many racers look for the 93 box. I don't think the curve was any better
than the 95's, so I'm guessing it had higher output?

The way it was explained to me is that there is nowhere for the excess voltage/ voltage spikes to go (lights, guages, warmers, etc.) and with no voltage regulator it would be even worse. Spinning it at 10,000 or over, vs. the intended 8-8500 makes that even worse. Not too mention the fact that the race motor is at wide open rpms (highest voltage output) most of the time vs. a trail sled. Think of it like constantly overcharging a car battery. I could Google it and get a lot more technical, or I could have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night but I went for the St.Lawrence University Best Western in Canton, NY instead.

Did the 93 ignitions not have the high rpm retard?

well the 95 unit is on there with coils, sounds the same on the stand , this sled has a regulator , with a diode in the trigger wire to the vdo to eliminate spike.

I have my doubts, lighting and ignition are two completely separate circuits and the regulator is part if the lighting circuit.
